Get on Your Bike!
Get Active during your stay at Conifer Lodges & Auchendoon at Conifers…
We won’t pretend to be experts on mountain biking but we do know how to have fun! Last week we took the opportunity to get on our bikes and try mountain biking for the first time at Kirroughtree 7 Stanes Mountain Bike Trails.
The weather has been on our side recently in Newton Stewart so when friends booked to stay, who are seasoned pros at mountain biking, we decided to get out and about and try something new!
We’ve been along to Kirroughtree on numerous occasions as the walks are great and we are always able to reward ourselves with lunch at the end however, we have never taken the plunge to get a little more daring and experience the trails on two wheels.
Our friends assured us that we could handle the challenge, so off we set to The Break Pad Bike Shop & Hire, situated next to the café at Kirroughtree, who had everything we needed for our first mountain biking experience and we can honestly say that the team cannot be more helpful. We opted for the electric bike to aide us on the inclines (a very wise decision may we add).
Armed with our bikes and helmets, our friends convinced us to start our mountain biking journey on the blue run, Larg Hill, easing us in gently to what would be a great day. After growing in confidence, we were led to The Twister (red run), this is where the electric bike proved to be worth the extra cost for the climbs. The Twister was definitely more challenging and a much needed rest and refuel was required after safely making it back to base.
After this excursion many may retreat back to Conifers to relax in the hot tub, but not our seasoned friends! So of course we had to take up the challenge and try Black Craigs (black run). The adrenaline was certainly pumping on this descent and bruises may have been collected enroute but we are so glad we dug deep and faced this challenging route.
So what did we learn from this? Try something new!! The mountain bike trails have been on our doorstep for years and we just thought we couldn’t do it when it turns out, we were more than capable and got to see parts of the Galloway Forest we would never have seen had we not tried something new!
