Galloway Forest Park

Thursday, February 5, 2015

Located in the beautiful county of Dumfries and Galloway and extremely close to our Conifer Lodges the Galloway Forest Park is truly one of the most stunning places to visit in Scotland.

Stretching around 300 square miles the park boasts some of the most gorgeous scenery found in the UK and is the perfect environment for a whole variety of wildlife to roam free including Goats Birds of Prey, Deer and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the rare Black Grouse which roams the area.

Keen mountain bikers can often be found in the park as it currently enjoys two 7Stanes mountain biking centres within the Park, Glentrool and Kirroughtree. The latter was voted the MBR trail of the year in 2010 whereas the Glentrool would be more suited to families who can enjoy striking views of the nearby lochs and hills however be warned the ride is long!

If you are enjoying a romantic break at our conifer lodges or fancy yourself as an astronomer in the making we can’t recommend visiting Galloway Park at night highly enough.

In November 2009 the Galloway Forest Park was awarded Dark Sky Park status from the International Dark Sky Association.  Due to the remoteness of the park and the forestry having some control over development on the land, it has an extremely low level of light pollution which is perfect for stargazing as well as for the wildlife which calls the park home.

With these prime conditions it’s not unusual to see thousands of stars and even on occasion the Milky Way all without the use of a telescope.

Just to the side of the Galloway Forest Park stands the Scottish Dark Sky Observatory. This observatory has a range of impressive facilities and is open to all including the public, schools, universities and amateur astronomers.

The roll off roof observatory offers a unique out in the open experience which is breath-taking on clear nights.

If visiting the observatory at night we recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment and don’t forget to wrap up warm as it can get quite chilly.

If you require any further information on the stunning Galloway Forest Park feel free to get in touch with us or book your stay in the nearby Conifer Lodges today!
